FERPA Policy

Summit College Preparatory School fully complies with the FERPA Policy to protect student educational records.

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The FERPA Policy grants specific rights to parents and eligible students, including the right to inspect and review educational records, request amendments, and control disclosures of personally identifiable information. At Summit College Preparatory School, we prioritize full FERPA compliance to ensure the protection of student data at all levels.

Your Rights Under the FERPA Policy

1. Right to Inspect and Review

Parents and eligible students can review their records within 45 days of submitting a request. Summit provides access through a written application to the FERPA administrator.

2. Right to Request Corrections

Inaccurate or misleading information can be formally challenged. If Summit does not amend the record, a formal hearing process is available.

3. Right to Control Disclosures

Generally, the school must have written permission to release information. However, FERPA allows some disclosures without consent under specific conditions such as emergencies, judicial orders, or transfer to another school.

Directory Information & Educational Records

Summit may disclose limited "directory information" such as the student’s name, grade level, and honors unless the parent or student opts out in writing. Educational records include transcripts, attendance, disciplinary records, class schedules, and health documentation. These are considered confidential and protected under the FERPA Policy.

Filing Complaints

If you believe the FERPA Policy has been violated, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education. Summit will cooperate fully in any investigations related to FERPA compliance.
